11 assumed dead in army helicopter crash

Seven US Marines and four aircrew were lost and assumed killed on Wednesday following their army helicopter crashed during a night exercising in Florida, military officials told. The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was reported lost on Tuesday about 8:30 pm close to Eglin Air Force Base.

The region was under dense fog but it was not urgently known if that performed a part in the mishap. Base spokesperson Andy Bourland told rescue members discovered remains from the aircraft at around 2:00 am and an examination was ongoing.11 assumed dead in army helicopter crash

Nine killed as rockets hit eastern Ukraine town

Nine killed as rockets hit eastern Ukraine town:

At least nine people were killed and 25
wounded in a rocket attack on Ukraine's military headquarters in the
residential area of a government-controlled eastern town Tuesday,
authorities said.

Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed and nine wounded during the attack
in Kramatorsk, Xinhua news agency reported citing Yury Biryukov, an
aide to President Petro Poroshenko.

Meanwhile, the press service of the Donetsk regional administration
said the rocket strikes left at least seven civilians dead and 16
injured.

According to the press service of the Defence Ministry's General
Staff, the rockets were fired from a Smerch multiple launch system on
Kramatorsk from the direction of the rebel-held Gorlovka town.

Kramatorsk, an industrial town in Donetsk region, has been under the control of Ukrainian government forces since June 2014.

According to a report earlier Tuesday by Efe news agency, the
Ukrainian military command said at least seven Ukrainian soldiers have
been killed and 23 injured over the past 24 hours in clashes with
pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian armed forces spokesman Vladislav Seleznev said that a total
of 559 soldiers, 28 of whom were seriously injured, are being treated
in the country's hospitals.

According to the Ukrainians, the heaviest fighting is taking place in
Debaltsevo, a strategic area located halfway between the cities of
Donetsk and Luhansk, both controlled by the separatists.

"After receiving a response from the Ukrainian soldiers, the
criminals withdrew with heavy casualties," said the spokesman, adding
that 18 attacks against the government forces took place in the 24-hour
period.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Kiev government and the separatists
are scheduled to hold a new round of negotiations Tuesday in Belarus's
capital Minsk, ahead of the scheduled summit between Ukraine, Russia,
Germany and France to present a peace plan for the Ukrainian conflict.

"I expect that the negotiations will not be easy. That is for sure,
for us and for them," said Igor Plotnitski, the leader of the
self-proclaimed breakaway Luhansk People's Republic, one of the two
entities created by the pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine.

The previous round of talks in Minsk ended in failure because the
separatist negotiators refused to recognise former Ukrainian president
Leonid Kuchma as Kiev's representative in the Ukraine Contact Group,
which also includes Russia and the Organisation for Security and
Cooperation in Europe.

The separatists said that they would not make any concessions
concerning the separation line of forces, after their militias seized
hundreds of miles of territory that was under the control of government
troops in recent weeks.

More than 5,300 combatants and civilians have been killed since the
outbreak of the conflict in eastern Ukraine in April last year.

Jaguar, Land Rover to vroom in Bond's 'Spectre'

Jaguar, Land Rover to vroom in Bond's 'Spectre': James Bond has a weakness for three things - beautiful women, gadgets, and cars. To keep up with the style and speed factor, Jaguar and Land Roverr have announced a partnership with
"Spectre", the upcoming instalment of the movie franchise.

They have also announced its line-up of vehicles, which will feature in the highly anticipated 24th instalment.

Actor Daniel Craig will be seen chasing all the bad guys in
sophisticated vehicles like Jaguar C-X75s, Range Rover Sport SVRs and
Defender Big Foots.

The Jaguar C-X75 will feature in a spectacular car chase sequence
through Rome alongside the Aston Martin DB10. The C-X75 vehicles have
been built in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering facility
in Oxfordshire, England.

Scenes including the heavily modified Land Rover Defenders and Range Rover Sport SVR have already been filmed in Austria.

And in the end, Big Foots are constructed by the Special Operations
division with huge 37-inch diameter off-road tyres to tackle the extreme
terrain. They also feature enhanced body protection.

"This is an exciting partnership for Jaguar Land Rover and an
opportunity to demonstrate the fantastic capabilities of the Special
Operations team,’’ said managing director of Jaguar Land Rover Special
Operations, John Edwards in a statement.

This is not the first time that the vehicles will feature in a Bond
film. Rugged Defender 110 Double Cab Pick Up made its appearance in the
opening sequence of “Skyfall”.

App that delivers lost key via post

Remember the hardship you had to undergo the last time you lost your car's keys while several kilometres away from home? Now, you can prevent the re-run of that incident with the help of an app.
New York-based KeyMe is trying to ease that annoying and costly mistake by changing how we duplicate our keys. Its iOS app lets users take a photo of their key and upload it to the cloud to print a new one on the fly, reported CNET.
"We've made hundreds of thousands of keys," Michael Harbolt, KeyMe's vice president of marketing, was quoted as saying.
KeyMe has almost two dozen automated locations in the greater New York City area, as well as a few scattered around in states like Florida, Arizona and Arkansas.
All one has to do is take a photograph of their home, office or car key. The app then uploads that image to the company's system. A press of a button tells the app to deliver the key to the user in the mail.
Even easier, one can travel to one of KeyMe's kiosks and have a new key printed in less than a minute.
Part of KeyMe's security measures against quick scans of other people's keys involve asking users to photograph both sides of the key and to use a blank white sheet of paper in the background.
Can thieves abuse this? No, says the company. KeyMe requires a fingerprint to use its kiosk, an e-mail account to sign up and a credit card and address to print a new key.
"We haven't had one instance of our keys being used in a crime," Harbolt reassured.

NASA laser technology to measure methane

Scientists would soon be able to tell the
exact measure of methane in the atmosphere with the help of a new,
highly accurate instrument.

Haris Riris, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, is advancing a Methane Sounder.

The scientific community would benefit enormously from such a capability, Riris said.

"Understanding current global methane trends is a difficult challenge
that cannot be resolved by existing measurement networks or current
satellite observations," he said.

Haris and his team will further improve the prototype instrument and
then test it during a NASA DC-8 aircraft campaign later this year.

"We're working to come up with a design that we think will work in
space," Riris said. Since initially flying the concept on a DC-8
research aircraft in 2011, he said his team had developed a better
instrument.

"Our goal is to prove that the technique works and meets precision and accuracy requirements," he added.

On Earth, methane is an important greenhouse gas and is in some
respects more worrisome than CO2. It is more potent and effective at
absorbing heat.

Apple planning own search engine to trump Google?

There perhaps isn't anything that a Google
search cannot find, but all of us who have only been 'googling' for
information and knowledge may soon be "appleing" for them.

The Daily Mail, in a report Monday, referred to an Apple job
advertisement posted earlier this month, calling for a professional to
develop "a search platform supporting hundreds of millions of users".

This has led to conjecture that the Cupertino, California-based tech
giant Apple might be after Google's crown for the undisputed king of
online search.

The advertisement has fuelled speculation that Apple was aiming to
launch a standalone search tool across iPhones, iPads and Macs, the
report said.

Back in 2010, analysts at investment banking and asset management
company Piper Jaffray claimed that there was 70 percent chance of Apple
launching its own mobile search engine by 2015.

In November last year, the Apple Insider reported that a web-crawling
bot (a software application running automated tasks on the internet)
was spotted on Apple's servers.

The rumours were bolstered that month when reports claimed that Apple
was looking to ditch Google as its default search engine on its Safari
browser.

Google has been the default engine on Safari for the past five years, but the deal is due to expire this year.

Although this could see Microsoft's Bing or Yahoo taking its place,
Apple could also be working to develop a search engine of its own.

Both Yahoo and Microsoft have already started canvassing Apple for
becoming the default search engine on iOS devices and Macs, according to
The Information's Amir Efrati.

Google reportedly paid Apple $82 million in 2009, and $1 billion last year for the partnership.

Search engines make money from such partnerships by sending traffic to their servers, and profiting from advertising revenue.

However, Apple has been distancing itself from its rival for some time.

Apple also replaced Google Maps with its own proprietary service, and stopped pre-installing Google-owned YouTube on devices.

However, even if Apple does replace Google as its default engine,
users are expected to be able to revert back, or select an alternative
in the browser's settings.

12 civilians killed in eastern Ukraine artillery fire

At least 12 civilians were killed and dozens injured this weekend by artillery fire in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian officials and pro-Russian separatists said Monday.
Seven of the deaths occurred Sunday in the towns of Avdeevka and Debaltseve controlled by government forces, said the head of the Ukraine interior department in the Donetsk region, Vyacheslav Abroskin.
"As a result of the bombings perpetrated by terrorists (separatists) in Avdeevka and Debaltseve, seven civilians were killed," Abroskin wrote on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Donetsk municipal officials reported that five civilians were killed and more than 50 injured by artillery fire over the weekend in the city, the main headquarters of the pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine.
On Monday, blasts were heard in different parts of the city which was rocked Sunday night by a huge explosion in the DKZJI chemical plant, located in a suburb east of the city.
According to preliminary data from city officials, the explosion occurred at an ammunition depot located at the chemical plant under the control of the rebels.
No one was killed in the blast, said separatist spokesperson Eduard Basurin who attributed the explosion to the impact of an artillery shell or a Ukrainian missile.
According to UN figures, more than 5,300 combatants and civilians have died in nearly 10 months of armed conflict in the eastern regions of Ukraine.

15 killed in Syria airstrikes

As many as 15 people were killed and dozens wounded Monday in government airstrikes on a rebel-held area east of the capital Damascus, a monitoring group reported.
Government forces also fired mortar shells on Douma in eastern Damascus amid renewed shelling by barrel bombs, Xinhua news agency reported citing London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, adding that many of the wounded were in critical condition.
The Syrian troops have unleashed a wide-scale campaign against Douma recently, after rebels there hit Damascus with dozens of mortar rounds, many of which slammed into residential districts.
The observatory relies on a network of contacts on the ground in Syria.
At least three people were killed and dozens wounded in the mortar attack on Damascus Thursday.

First love hard to forget

First love hard to forget
More than a third of Britons still have feelings for their first love, and one in four has got back in touch thanks to Facebook, reveals a new study.
Six out of 10 people regularly think about their old flame, the study found.
Nearly four out of 10 admit to still carrying a torch for their teenage sweetheart, according to a poll for The Best Of Me, a film about a couple who give first love a second chance.
"Many look back more fondly at a first love than other failed relationships, leaving many wondering what might have been and, possibly, what could still be," a spokesman for the film was quoted as saying.
Twelve percent of those who stay in touch with the first love consider them a good friend, although a third admit their partner does not know

5 killed in US shooting

Britain's Prince Charles told the counts of unsafe young Muslims being radicalised by "crazy stuff" on the Internet was terrifying, in an interview to be broadcast on Sunday. The Prince also showed worry about Christians fleeing the Middle East in droves, saying the condition might finish with very few left in the cradle of the religion. In a BBC radio interview, Charles told radicalisation was "one of the greatest worries" and the matter could not be simply "swept under the carpet.

"It's the extent which this is happening is the alarming part," the 66-year-old told. Talking of "the values we hold dear", Charles told: "You'd think that the people who have come here, born here, go to school here would abide by those values and outlooks"

Buy a Chromecast, Google pays $6

Buy a Chromecast, Google pays $6
The Chromecast is a great little device. The only thing that would make it better, if Google randomly gave you free money for owning one! That’s what they’re doing today.

As noted by Android, Google is giving out $6 in Google Play credits to Chromecast users. The idea is that you’ll use the $6 to rent some movie over Valentine’s weekend… but you’re also free to use it to beef up your Clash Of Clans village, if that’s more your thing.

However, make sure that you are connected to the same network as your Chromecast. Open the Chromecast iOS/Android app. Tap your device, then find the “Check For Offers” button and confirm your Chromecast serial number with Google.

TransAsia starts pilot retraining

TransAsia Airways scrapped dozens of flights on Saturday, the initial day of a pilot retraining programme, as rescuers recovered five more bodies from the river in Taiwan where the plane drowned. Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration instructed all the airline's staff who wheel ATR jet to take exams on handling the aircraft after it came out the pilots may have unaccountably shut off one of the engines before Flight GE235 went down previous week.

Commencing today, all of TransAsia's 71 ATR pilots will face tests to be conducted by the CAA and third-party professional units for an estimated period of four days, the carrier told in a statement. As a result, some of their domestic flights will be adjusted, it told, describing that 90 domestic flights will be cancelled by Monday.
